Do You Need a Visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. The good news: Tanzania operates a simple, online e-visa system that can be obtained from anywhere in the world. A small number of nationalities are exempt — check the official Tanzania Immigration Service website for current exemptions.
The Tanzania E-Visa: Step by Step
- Visit evisa.go.tz (official Tanzania Immigration portal)
- Create an account with your email address
- Complete the application form (passport details, travel dates, purpose of visit)
- Upload required documents: passport scan, passport photo, proof of accommodation
- Pay the visa fee: $50 USD for most nationalities (single-entry, 90-day tourist visa)
- Receive e-visa by email within 3–10 business days
- Print your e-visa and present it with your passport on arrival
Apply at least 3 weeks before your travel date. Processing times can vary, and some applications require additional verification. Avoid applying at the last minute.
Visa on Arrival
Tanzania also offers visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and other major entry points. The process is straightforward but can be slow during busy periods. Bring $50 in USD cash (clean, undamaged notes) and your completed arrival card.
Yellow Fever Requirements
Tanzania does not require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for travellers arriving from non-endemic countries. However, if you are arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever-endemic country (including Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, DRC, and many others), you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
Given that many Tanzania safari itineraries involve connecting through Nairobi, we strongly recommend getting the Yellow Fever vaccine before travel. It is also valid for life — a one-time investment.
Other Health Requirements & Recommendations
- Malaria prophylaxis: Recommended for all Tanzania destinations. Consult your doctor for appropriate medication
- Routine vaccinations: Ensure Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and standard vaccinations are up to date
- COVID-19: No current requirements as of 2025 — check before travel for updates
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover: Strongly recommended
